More economical than single-phase power and more suitable for larger premises, businesses and commercial properties, three-phase electrical power is a common method of alternating-current electric power generation, transmission and distribution. This is exactly why we chose three-phase electrical power to form the core of a longterm build project of a new doctors surgery in Ilkeston. The project took place over the course of three years and saw us work alongside a number of different parties, including architects, builders, plumbers, joiners, plasterers, civil engineers and decorators in order to achieve the final results.
We consulted, designed and quoted for the project in question. Thorough planning was then undertaken and work began onsite. Regular site meetings ensured that work was progressing as planned and allowed the various parties onsite to work effectively together. The first fix ensured that all cables needed for the electrical supplies were installed, and later we were able to move on to the second fix, which saw all electrical fixtures connected and finished accordingly. We then performed thorough testing and commissioning to confirm the protective setup of equipment and its functionality. The project is now complete, with the surgery opening imminently.

Power Data Solutions
These days, all of our essential devices require constant power. Easy connections are therefore key components to the modern environment. Accessible plug points save both electrical and personal energy. When plugs are connected in awkward places, people are less likely to switch off or unplug devices, therefore leading to wasted electricity and higher bills. To combat this, we therefore chose a range of On and Under Surface, In Surface and Modular Systems to suit the individual setup needs of each room.
General & Feature Lighting
Good lighting is essential to achieving the right atmosphere. In the doctors surgery, we wanted to create a space with lighting that was welcoming and calming for patients as well as being effective as a working environment for the doctors, nurses and administrative staff. This ethos was applied across the general lighting and in the case of any feature lighting. Another key factor was to install energy efficient lighting throughout the building. Businesses can save hundreds if not thousands of pounds in electricity bills each year if they switch to energy efficient lighting. It only makes sense to equip a new build from the outset with the best technology and most effective, energy-saving lighting possible.
Outside & Car Park Lighting
Effective and efficient outdoor lighting is important for the safety of both pedestrians and vehicles. People must both feel and be safe. To achieve this, the area outside the surgery had to be well lit to ensure safe movement. This meant positioning lighting to give guidance, highlighting entrances, exits, and boundaries as well as giving special consideration to family and disabled parking areas and access ramps. However, it was also important to consider how to situate the light not only to prevent risk but to minimise upward and stray light to minimise upward and stray light which would cause shadows between cars. The carpark lights are planned to be operated via a timer and photo cell so they come on when it starts to get dark and turn off after the surgery is closed to save energy. Walkway lights around the building are on sensors to enable safe access for opening and locking up.
Heat Recovery & Ventilation Units (HRV)
This energy recovery ventilation system uses specialist equipment to create fresh air and improved climate control at the same time as saving energy by reducing heating and cooling requirements. As building techniques and insulation usage becomes evermore efficient, HRVs are important additions to new builds. This is because buildings are more airtight and less well ventilated as a result. Whilst opening a window does provide ventilation, it is not an efficient solution as it loses heat and humidity in the winter and gains these two things in the summer. This is not desirable for achieving the ideal indoor climate, nor is it conducive for energy efficiency. HRVs are, therefore, a fantastic solution: they introduce fresh air and improve climate control in an energy efficient manner.
Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning or HVAC
Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning or HVAC isn’t always deemed an essential in the UK due to our lack of overly warm weather. However, in many commercial premises it is a very useful and beneficial addition. Air conditioning creates comfortable conditions by delivering consistent and conditioned air to spaces throughout a building, thus improving thermal comfort and indoor air quality. In summer, the cooling properties of air conditioning are particularly appreciated and create a much more pleasant environment. However, the benefits of air conditioning are also felt year long. An overly warm or stuffy atmosphere isn’t the right environment for a doctors surgery, therefore air conditioning was deemed an important addition for the practical benefit of the permanent staff and the patients alike.
Bespoke Solar Heating System By harnessing the heat from sunlight, solar energy heats the roof space which has a heat collector used to heat the building. This renewable energy helps to reduce energy bills and carbon footprints, making it an appealing choice for many commercial properties. To suit the surgery’s specific needs, we helped to create a bespoke system with a tailored setup. The area of roof was identified that would receive the most direct sunlight and positioned the solar panels here. As the panels work in both direct and diffused sunlight, the building will be heated throughout the year and will only require the assistance of an additional heating, ventilation, and air conditioning or HVAC in winter.
