Explained: Different types of office fit-outs

An office fit-out is becoming extremely popular now more than ever, as business owners are redesigning their office spaces to comply with the recent covid safety guidelines and to also offer a flexible and agile method of working to their staff.

An electrical fit-out allows customers to customise and specify their exact electrical needs and requirements for their business and office space.

There are a few different fit-out services available which we will go into more detail about in this post.

      The Building: Shell and Core

The framework of the building is the actual shell that will have the basic essential services such as the mains water system and the mains electrical supply, but everything else will need to be installed such as ceilings, wall coverings, lightings etc. This will be completed with either a Category A fit-out or a Category B fit-out.

      Category A fit-out

A category A fit-out is basically a blank canvas. It includes the basic finishes to the floors, ceilings and walls but there are no additional fixtures added such as meeting rooms or separate office spaces.

This level of fit-out service covers the basic needs of an office to be functional. Category A fit-outs are usually carried out by landlords in order to make the building adequate for commercial renting. Other businesses can then come in and implement the category B fit-out, which we will explain below.

      Category B fit-out

On the other hand, a Category B fit-out is a finished office space that has been designed and constructed to the specific requirements of the client. This is the most common type of fit-out as customers can design the layout and map out all the electrical points they require in order to create a more flexible working environment.

Category B fit-out includes installing everything that you would typically need for an office to function. This includes electrical power points, IT infrastructure, AV, lighting and also fit out of other spaces such as kitchens, meeting rooms etc.

At CJ Timms we specialise in providing our customers Cat A and Cat B electrical fit out services. They are the most popular fit out services as it allows the customers to fully customise their office space to meet their specific business needs.
